The immune system is our chief defence against infection, but it is a double-edged sword. Overexuberant immune responses can be harmful or even fatal. Our lab studies a family of signalling molecules known as cytokines, key immune messengers that control the size and quality of an immune response. We use viral, bacterial and parasitic infection models to analyze cytokine responses in vivo, and our goal is to be able to use cytokine signalling to improve the health outcome in infection and other immune-related diseases.
