Air Plasma Spray System

Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario
What the facility does

Produces ionized Ar (or He) and melts and propels molten metal/ceramic/polymer on a part surface (in the form of an overlay coating)

Areas of expertise

Our air plasma spray system allows researchers to apply scientifically designed coating materials onto a roughened surface. The coatings are commonly used to render a part/component more corrosion-, oxidation-, wear-,or heat-resistant. With the surface coatings, the base materials can be designed to have only the needed mechanical integrity while the coating provides the surface properties. Performance improvement and cost savings (from the use of less exotic base materials) can be realized with property coating selection and application. More recently, this equipment is used to develop two new series of coatings: corrosion resistant coatings for supercritical cooled nuclear reactors and anti-icing coatings for aircraft applications.

Research services

Testing Services, including material identification, failure investigation, hardness/wear test, thermal property test, microstructure analysis, new material and process development, gas turbine component repairs using brazing, coating or welding, and various heat treatments in air, vacuum and argon.
