Cultus Lake Salmon Research Laboratory

Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Cultus Lake, British Columbia
What the facility does

Inorganic chemistry analysis; radioisotope analyses; high-quality freshwater analyses; salmon population recovery (hatchery); adult salmon stressor research (using experimental tanks)

Areas of expertise

Cultus Lake Salmon Research Laboratory, in conjunction with facilities at Simon Fraser University, houses laboratory and field staging facilities for investigation of stressors to salmon productivity. Expertise encompasses both anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic factors. Skills span the range of freshwater ecology, especially that of salmonid species in the Canadian Pacific. This includes expertise in stress physiology, migration, temperature and flow modeling and monitoring, limnological assessments, hydro-acoustic assessment of juvenile salmonids, landscape ecology and geomatics, quantitative modeling, and water quality analyses. There are also seasonal staff on site that conduct whole-population assessments (stock assessment) of salmon, as well as aquaculture-based enhancement of salmon stocks.
