Areas of expertise

The Centre for Chemical Analysis, Research and Training (C-CART) provides research support, training and chemical analysis services to undergraduate and graduate students, university researchers, government agencies and private-sector R&D companies. The instruments associated with C-CART are grouped into five service areas: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography (XRD), mass spectrometry, materials characterization and optical spectroscopy.

Mass Spectrometry FacilityAgilent 1290 UHPLC-Sciex 5600 TripleTOF

UHPLC (max press to 1200bar), binary pump, ALS with 108 vial capacity with UV-VIS detector (190-640 nm). Triple TOF equipped with Turbo V Source (ESI and APCI capable) and Calibrant Delivery System. Mass range TOF: 40 kDa; mass selection range on Q1: 5-1250 m/z; TOF mass resolution: above 35K (FWHM) for 956 m/z. Analyst, PeakView and MultiQuant software available.

UHPLC-UV can be used independently on a separate station with OpenLab.

 Agilent 1260 HPLC - 1260 DAD - 6230B MSD TOFHPLC-UV-MS High Resolution TOF with DAD detector (190-600nm), dedicated pumps for normal or reverse chromatography, thermostatted column compartment. ESI and APPI sources available. Mass range to 3200 m/z (extended dynamic range) and to 10,000 m/z (in extended mass range). MassHunter software.
 Agilent 7890A GC - 5975C MSD Inert XL (EI/CI)ALS with 100 vial capacity, Split/Splitless injection, Zebron ZB-5ms column, single quad MS, EI or CI sources, SCAN/SIM mode. ChemStation Software.
 6890N GC - 5973 inert MSD (EI)ALS with 100 vial tray capacity, Split/Splitless injection, DB-5MS column, EI source, single quad MS, SCAN/SIM mode. ChemStation Software.
 Agilent 7100 CE- UV/VISDAD detector (190-600 nm), CE-UV can be interfaced with the Agilent 6200 series MS (TOF) for larger projects. ChemStation Software.
NMR Spectroscopy FacilityBruker AVANCE 500 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometerWalk-up service. TXI inverse triple resonance probe, Z-gradient for 1H observation with 13C, 15N decoupling. All standard 1D and 2D gradient experiments available. Variable temperature capable.
 Bruker AVANCE II 600 MHz NMRMultiple probes for high-resolution, solid-state and microimaging capabilities, enabling a wide range of materials to be researched, from proteins and inorganic solids characterization to diffusion coefficients measurements. Variable temperature capable.
 Bruker AVANCE III 300 MHz NMRWalk-up service. Handles solution phase samples by autosampler, with multiple nuclei (1H, 13C, 19F, 31P, 29Si, 27Al, 15N, 7Li, 11B) and pulse profiles. All standard 1D and 2D gradient experiments available. Variable temperature capable.
Single-Crystal XRD FacilityRigaku XtaLAB Synergy-S X-ray diffractometer (XRD)Single-crystal structure determination. Equipped with a 4-circle Kappa goniometer, dual PhotonJet sources (Cu and Mo), a HyPix-6000HE Hybrid Photon Counting (HPC) detector and an Oxford Cryosystems 800 Series Cryostream.
Materials Characterization FacilityCary 6000i UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometerHigh-performance dual-beam UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer, with a 175nm to 1800nm and A > 8 a.u. detection range by InGaAs detector. Variable slit widths (to 0.01nm). Diffuse reflectance array (DRA) accessory available.
 Mettler-Toledo DSC1 differential scanning calorimeter (DSC)Manual and automatic measurement of enthalpic changes from –70 oC to 550oC, with heating/cooling rates of 0.02-300K/min and 0.002-50K/min, respectively, by a high-sensitivity FRS 5 56-thermocouple sensor, Julabo intercooler and corrosion-free Ag furnace. Mass-flow controller allows for automated control of sample atmosphere through selection of various gases and variable flow rates.
 Bruker Tensor 27 FT-IRSpectral range of 7500 to 370 cm-1, with a Pike Technologies ZnSe MIRacle ATR for direct analysis of solids, liquids, powders and gases.
 TA Instruments Q500 thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA)Features a high-sensitivity thermobalance (0.1μg sensitivity, ≤ ±0.1% accuracy) and a responsive low-mass furnace (ambient to 1000oC range, 0.01oC -100oC/min heating rate), with equipped hi-res TGA and modulated TGA accessories to allow for a variety of isothermal, constant heating rate and variable heating rate experiments in air or in an O2-free environment.
 PerkinElmer Spectrum Two N FT-NIR spectrometerInGaAs detector enables collection of data over a total range of 10,000 to 4,000 cm-1 . The Near Infrared Reflectance Module with sample spinner allows for collecting diffuse reflectance spectra of solids, granules, pastes, powders and turbid liquids with Heatable Transmission Module for easy elevated temperature measurements.
