Human Factors and Applied Statistics Laboratory

University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario
What the facility does

Driver behaviour research; driver distraction mitigation; statistical modelling of crash data; on-road and driving simulator studies

Areas of expertise

The infrastructure consists of an integrated instrumented vehicle laboratory, which includes an instrumented vehicle for on-road data collection and a static laboratory for participant preparation, large-scale data storage, and data post-processing and analysis. The instrumented vehicle is one of a kind in Canada, and among a select few in the world. It enables the study of driver behavior in the real world and validation of driving simulator research.

Our research group also owns a driving simulator facility. The physiological sensors are also being utilized in our driving simulator. These sensors enable us to capture driver state through measures such as eye glance behaviours and heart rate.
