What the facility does

Provide training, support and enable research with human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells

Area(s) of Expertise

Pluripotent stem cells are capable of differentiating into all the cells of the embryo proper and adult organism. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are created by reprogramming mature adult cells (such as skin cells). Pluripotent stem cells offer a unique opportunity to dissect early human development, generate models of disease, and develop cellular or drug therapeutics that target a disease or target specific patients with a disease (i.e. personalized medicine). Pluripotent stem cells are important tools in Regenerative/Translational/Personalized Medicine.

The Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Facility is multidimensional in its reach within the scientific community. As a facility we provide: 1) All the infrastructure necessary to work with and generated human pluripotent stem cell lines; 2) Training on how to work with human embryonic stem cells (hESCs)/induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs); 3) Troubleshooting resources for members of the community working with stem cells; 4) Tools for new and experienced investigators embarking on using stem cell models; 5) Contract work for researchers at the University of Ottawa, its affiliates, government agencies, and other academic and private institutions; 6) Host symposiums and workshops for trainee education; and 7) Provide letters of support, budgets, and collaborative grant writing upon request.
