Applied human retrovirology and retroviral immunology.
Dr. Barbeau’s human retrovirology lab, located in UQAM’s biological sciences department, offers a unique environment where research currently focuses on the study of human retroviruses in a pathogenic context and the context of normal development of the placenta. The containment level 3 laboratory is the only one of its kind at UQAM. It enables a wide array of experimental approaches for studying human retroviruses, including HIV. The lab is equipped primarily for studies of various types of cellular infections (primary cells and strains) and allows a variety of measurements of the replication efficiency of these viruses. Specialized equipment is dedicated to cellular transfection approaches. The CL3 laboratory is also available to Dr. Mohammad-Ali Jenabian. His research focuses on the immune response to HIV and SIV, and he uses the CL3 laboratory to handle samples from HIV-infected patents and SIV-infected monkeys.
