Engineering Process Intensification and Catalysis (EPIC) Lab

Polytechnique Montréal, Montréal, Québec
What the facility does

Uses alternative energy sources to intensify chemical and mechanical processes to reduce their energy needs

Areas of expertise

The EPIC laboratory facilities use alternative energy sources to intensify chemical and mechanical processes to reduce their energy needs. The laboratory is also equipped with instruments to measure the intensity of these energy sources and to quantify the system responses following the intensification.

For example, we are equipped with batch and continuous ultrasonic microwave and mechano-chemical reactors that can accelerate the speed of chemical reactions, confer precise structural-morphological properties on solids and degrade different types of solid matrices or reduce their size.

Thanks to various integrated detection systems, we can precisely measure the temperature and pressure at the micro size and develop data offline to identify mass and heat transfer characteristics.

A UV-Vis spectrophotometer with an integrating sphere allows us remarkable flexibility in terms of chemical quantitative analysis of both liquids and solids. A gas chromatograph with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) with an autosampler allow us to analyze a variety of organic compounds, both volatile and not, with a high throughput.
