What the facility does

Supports research and training with customized biomanufacturing services, including fermentation, process scale-up, protein expression, and downstream processing.

Areas of expertise

The facility provides expertise in biomanufacturing process development and scale-up using cell-free systems and Biosafety Level 1 microorganisms, including Saccharomyces, Komagataella, and Escherichia coli. Staff support fermentation process optimization, protein expression, pilot-scale production, and downstream processing, helping researchers and industry partners adapt laboratory-scale methods for larger-scale research and biomanufacturing applications.

Research services

Consultation: Assess existing bioprocesses and develop scale-up strategies tailored to research objectives, including growth characterization, extracellular product recovery, and biomass processing. 

Process scale-up: Support the scale-up of biomanufacturing processes using pilot-scale fermentation systems equipped with pH, dissolved oxygen, and feed control for process monitoring and optimization.

Downstream processing: Provide downstream processing capabilities for biomass separation, cell disruption, ultrafiltration, and lyophilization to support product recovery, purification, and process development.

  • Bioreactors for microbial culture scale-up: Support fermentation process development and scale-up using bioreactors with working volumes ranging from 4 L to 50 L and integrated pH, dissolved oxygen, and feed control systems (including the Labfors 5 Bioreactor System).
  • Centrifugation systems: Separate cells from fermentation broths through continuous clarification and biomass recovery (GEA HSD1 disc stack centrifuge).
  • Cell disruption systems: Process microbial biomass and produce cell lysates using high-shear homogenization (Microfluidics M-110P Microfluidizer).
  • Tangential flow filtration systems: Concentrate and purify proteins and other biomolecules through ultrafiltration and buffer exchange (Repligen KrosFlo KR2i Tangential Flow Filtration [TFF] System).
  • Lyophilization systems: Preserve and stabilize biological samples through freeze-drying for long-term storage.
  • Protein purification systems: Separate and purify proteins and other biomolecules using fast protein liquid chromatography (Bio-Rad NGC Quest 10 Plus Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC) system).
